6. What do contemporary audiences want today from British sitcom?

1. Good characters, and humour arising naturally from the characters.

2. No, but the type of comedy has evolved. Peep Show, Green Wing, The Book Group, The Office: all brilliant, but very different from Fawlty Towers, Dads Army, etc.

3. It's in the writing.

4. The question presupposes there has been a demise!

1. Not totally removed from reality so we can almost relate to the characters.

2.No, but I think we expect more now than we did.

3.Throwing in jokes is not the same as creating one liners.

4.I think that good sitcoms are still out there, but we are swamped by American ones so they can get lost.

5.They need to grow out of everyday experiences. See the humour in life and exaggerate it.

Okay, here's are my take on things

1.) Writing, characters and cast.

2.)Its no so much a decline but as a reduction of the market size. The most popular sitcoms were in the days of only 3 channels. Mass appeal is not something that happens any more due to the proliferation of channels and the fact that products are made to specific markets and demographics.

3.) They can't. It a question of finding production companies that will sanction them.

4.) As stated above, its not so much of a decline, but a change in consumer markets. There are more channels now and this inevitably reduces total viewing figures.

5.) It can't. The environment that existed in the past during the so called golden age, does not exist any more. The market is also more sophisticated. If you try to make a broad based, non threatening, mainstream sitcom and air it before the watershed on the BBC, then it will usually fail due to it trying to be too many things. It will be bland and safe.

6.) They want to be entertained within their definition of that term. Again this has changed in the last 30 years and people now have diverse taste. The days of mass consensus in comedy have gone as they have with music.
